The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has disbursed ₦2.4 billion in insurance benefits to families of deceased police officers across Nigeria. The payment was made under the Group Life Assurance scheme.
The Group Life Assurance scheme is designed to provide financial support to families of officers who died in active service.
The Nigeria Police Force periodically conducts cheque presentation ceremonies to distribute benefits to next of kin of deceased personnel.
According to the police authorities, the scheme forms part of welfare initiatives aimed at supporting families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Speaking during the presentation, Kayode Egbetokun said the disbursement covered insurance benefits for officers who died between 2020 and 2023.
He stated:
“Today, we are disbursing cheques totalling ₦2.4 billion to the next of kin of our deceased officers under the Group Life Assurance scheme.”
The Inspector-General noted that the payment reflects ongoing efforts to ensure that entitlements of fallen officers are processed and delivered to their families.
He added that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to improving the welfare of serving and retired officers, as well as supporting families of those who died in service.
Police authorities stated that the disbursement covered beneficiaries drawn from various commands and formations across the country.
The funds were paid directly to verified next of kin of the deceased officers, following completion of documentation and verification processes required under the scheme.
The Inspector-General reaffirmed the commitment of the police leadership to prioritise welfare programmes, including insurance benefits, pensions and other entitlements for personnel.
He said the force would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure timely settlement of outstanding benefits.
