The Niger Delta Power Holding Company has set October 2027 as the revised completion date for the long-delayed 570-megawatt Alaoji Combined Cycle Power Plant in Abia State.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NDPHC, Jennifer Adighije, disclosed the new timeline during an oversight visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Power to the project site.

The Alaoji power plant project forms part of efforts to expand electricity generation capacity in Nigeria. It is expected to improve power supply in the South-East region when completed.

Adighije explained that the project had experienced delays in the past, which affected its initial completion schedule.

According to the NDPHC chief, the project has currently reached about 16 percent completion. She noted that progress has improved under the present management of the company.

Adighije said when the current leadership assumed office, the level of work completed on the project was slightly above one percent.

She said the company had directed the contractor to prepare a recovery plan to accelerate construction.

“Presently, we had experienced some slippages in the past, and we had to compel the contractor to come up with a recovery plan, which they have done,” she said.

She added that the earlier expectation was to complete the project before the end of the year but that the timeline had now been adjusted.

“Initially, we had envisaged that the project would be completed by the end of this year, but clearly that is not possible. With the revised schedule, we are now working towards completion by the third quarter of 2027,” she said.

Adighije also told lawmakers that the company is providing the necessary technical and financial support to ensure steady progress.

“In terms of finances, we always ensure that we meet our obligations to the contractor. We are not owing the contractor, so there is absolutely no reason to envisage any slippages for now,” she said.

Chairman of the House Committee on Power, Rep. Victor Nwokolo, commended NDPHC management for efforts to accelerate work on the facility.

After inspecting the project, he said the committee observed progress in recovering equipment required for the plant’s completion.

He stated that more than 100 containers of equipment had been recovered, describing it as evidence of renewed efforts to move the project forward.

Nwokolo also noted that delays in clearing imported equipment at Nigerian ports had slowed several electricity projects in the past.

The completion of the Alaoji Combined Cycle Power Plant is expected to add 570 megawatts to Nigeria’s electricity generation capacity and support improved supply in parts of the country.
