Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have warned that the party must resolve its internal divisions or risk losing relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The warning was issued during the inauguration of the party’s 2026 National Convention Planning Committee in Abuja.
The PDP has faced months of internal crisis, including leadership disputes and court cases that have affected its cohesion.
Party leaders said the situation has created the need for reconciliation and restructuring within its ranks.
The inauguration of the convention planning committee is part of efforts to reposition the party and prepare for its national convention scheduled for March 29 to 30, 2026.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the committee and former Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, described the upcoming convention as critical to the party’s future.
He said: “this convention is more than a gathering… a test.”
Ikpeazu stated that the objective is to produce a credible National Working Committee capable of repositioning the PDP for electoral success.
Other party officials present included the Chairman of the National Caretaker Working Committee, Abdulrahman Mohammed, Acting National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and National Organising Secretary, Umaru Bature.
They emphasised the need for unity, internal reconciliation and credible leadership selection as part of efforts to strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
Party leaders said the convention will serve as a platform to rebuild trust among members and present a unified structure to the public.
They noted that the exercise is expected to address internal challenges and provide a framework for repositioning the party.
The warning by party leaders highlights concerns within the PDP about the impact of internal divisions on its political standing.
The convention is expected to play a role in shaping the party’s organisational direction ahead of the 2027 elections.
