The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has commended Dangote Cement Plc for introducing a new transport safety policy designed to strengthen road safety standards, reduce accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles and improve operational compliance across its logistics network.

The transport safety policy was unveiled as part of the company’s renewed commitment to safer transportation practices within Nigeria’s road haulage sector. The initiative received recognition from FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, who described the development as a significant contribution to ongoing efforts aimed at reducing crashes and protecting lives on Nigerian roads.

According to Dangote Cement, the policy introduces stricter controls on fleet operations, including a prohibition on night driving for cement trucks, enhanced driver monitoring mechanisms and strengthened compliance requirements for transport contractors working with the company. The measures also include mandatory adherence to safety regulations, improved driver welfare programmes and regular training aimed at reducing human-error-related accidents.

Speaking during discussions with company officials, Mohammed said the initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to responsible corporate transportation practices.

“We commend Dangote Cement for taking proactive steps towards enhancing safety on Nigerian roads. This policy demonstrates a strong commitment to protecting lives and property,” he said.

The Corps Marshal noted that articulated vehicles play a critical role in Nigeria’s economy but also present significant safety risks when not properly managed. He stated that improved fleet oversight and stronger compliance standards among major transport operators could help reduce the frequency of road traffic crashes involving heavy-duty trucks.

Dangote Cement explained that the transport safety policy emerged from a comprehensive review of its logistics operations and was designed to address key safety concerns identified across its transportation chain. The company said the framework reflects its commitment to ensuring that safety remains a core operational priority as it continues to distribute products nationwide.

As one of Nigeria’s largest manufacturing companies, Dangote Cement operates an extensive haulage network that supports the movement of cement products across multiple states. The scale of its logistics operations means safety measures adopted by the company have implications not only for its workforce but also for communities and road users along major transport corridors.

Road safety experts have repeatedly highlighted the need for stronger fleet management standards, particularly within the heavy-duty transport sector. Concerns over speeding, driver fatigue, poor vehicle maintenance and regulatory non-compliance have contributed to calls for greater accountability among commercial transport operators.

The new transport safety policy aligns with broader efforts by regulatory authorities and private-sector stakeholders to improve transportation safety across Nigeria. FRSC officials said collaboration between government agencies and major logistics operators remains essential to reducing road fatalities and creating safer highways for all users.
