Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has commended Oba Olufemi Sodeinde, the Olu of Iju, Gbalefa in Ogun State, on the occasion of the traditional ruler’s 100th birthday and lauded his service and leadership in the community.
Oba Olufemi Sodeinde is the traditional ruler of Iju in the Gbalefa area of Ado‑Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Traditional rulers in Nigeria play ceremonial and cultural roles and are often recognised for contributions to community cohesion and development.
Obasanjo spoke during the centenary birthday celebration held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday.
He described Oba Sodeinde as a selfless royal father whose enduring love for humanity is worthy of emulation.
The former president said reaching the age of 100 was a significant milestone and expressed gratitude to God for granting the monarch longevity and the opportunity to make a positive impact within his community.
He recalled his long‑standing relationship with Oba Sodeinde, tracing it back to 1967 when he served in the Nigerian Army.
Obasanjo noted that Oba Sodeinde stood firmly for the people of the Owu Kingdom in the Gbalefa community.
He said he had supported the installation of the monarch, even when some had reservations because the king was above 90 years old at the time of his installation.
Obasanjo congratulated Oba Sodeinde and prayed that God would uphold him in good health and strength.
Also at the event, Mrs Bola Obasanjo, wife of the former president, described Oba Sodeinde as a unifier and bridge‑builder who embraces people from all backgrounds.
She said his love for others and commitment to fostering unity were evident throughout his life and service.
The celebration and tributes from Obasanjo and his wife acknowledge Oba Sodeinde’s century of life and tenure as traditional ruler.
Such recognition may reinforce the cultural significance of longstanding traditional leadership in contributing to community identity and cohesion in Ogun State.
