The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has directed manufacturers to recall alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and containers below 200ml.
The alcohol drinks recall forms part of intensified Federal Government efforts to enforce regulations aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm in Nigeria.
NAFDAC instructed manufacturers to identify and properly document all affected products before destroying them under the agency’s supervision.
The manufacturers are also expected to bear the cost of the recall and destruction exercise.
The agency said the alcohol drinks recall was necessary to remove prohibited small-volume alcoholic beverages from circulation and reduce their accessibility, particularly among young people.
The ban on the production, importation, distribution and sale of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and containers below 200ml became fully effective on January 1, 2026.
The effective date followed the expiration of the transition period previously granted to manufacturers to comply with the regulation.
NAFDAC warned manufacturers, distributors and other businesses that fail to comply with the directive that they could face regulatory sanctions.
The latest enforcement comes as the Federal Government begins implementing the Nigeria Alcohol Policy and its Multisectoral Implementation Plan 2026–2030.
The policy was launched in Abuja by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare as a national framework for tackling harmful alcohol consumption.
It also provides guidance for regulating aspects of alcohol production, distribution, marketing and consumption.
Speaking at the launch, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Daju Kachollom, identified harmful alcohol use and the circulation of illicit and unregulated alcoholic products as significant public health concerns.
He stressed the importance of cooperation between government agencies, the alcohol industry, civil society organisations and other stakeholders in implementing the policy effectively.
According to him, reducing alcohol-related harm requires coordinated action beyond the health sector because excessive and harmful alcohol use is connected to various health and social challenges.
The Federal Government said implementation of the policy, alongside stronger enforcement of existing regulations, is expected to encourage responsible alcohol consumption and reduce alcohol-related harm.
It also said the measures are aimed at protecting the health and wellbeing of Nigerians.
The alcohol drinks recall therefore represents another step in enforcing the restrictions on small-volume alcoholic beverages that took full effect earlier in 2026.
