Former President Goodluck Jonathan appears increasingly Caught in-between rival factions of the Peoples Democratic Party as internal divisions within the opposition party continue ahead of the 2027 elections. Conflicting positions from competing PDP leadership blocs over Jonathan’s political future have intensified uncertainty surrounding his possible participation in the presidential race.
The PDP has remained divided by prolonged leadership disputes involving rival factions aligned with different political interests within the party. One bloc is reportedly linked to former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, while another is associated with Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.
The internal crisis escalated following reports that Jonathan could seek the PDP presidential ticket for the 2027 election. The situation has left the former president politically Caught in-between competing party structures claiming legitimacy and control over party processes.
Speaking to Vanguard, Mohammed Haruna Jungudo, National Publicity Secretary of the faction aligned with Wike, dismissed reports suggesting Jonathan was linked to his group’s political activities. Jungudo stated that the faction neither issued nomination forms to Jonathan nor expected him to emerge through its structure.
Meanwhile, Ini Ememobong, spokesperson for the rival Turaki-led faction, maintained that Jonathan remained a recognised PDP member eligible to contest under the party platform. Ememobong disclosed that the faction had approached the Independent National Electoral Commission seeking recognition of its leadership position.
The dispute has further complicated the political environment surrounding Jonathan, who is now widely viewed as Caught in-between conflicting party authorities and legal uncertainties. Reports also indicated that ongoing court proceedings challenging Jonathan’s eligibility for the 2027 election experienced delays after allegations of judicial bias emerged at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
