The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has handed over consignments of illicit substances seized during anti-smuggling operations to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, with the total street value estimated at N16.7 billion. The seizures were intercepted at different ports and border corridors as part of intensified enforcement against drug trafficking and transnational smuggling activities.

The handover forms part of ongoing collaboration between the NCS and NDLEA aimed at strengthening border surveillance and disrupting narcotics trafficking networks operating through Nigeria’s ports, airports, and land borders. Security agencies have recently intensified operations against illicit drug trafficking amid concerns over organised crime and the growing circulation of dangerous substances within the country.

Authorities say Nigeria’s strategic position within regional trade routes has made the country vulnerable to trafficking syndicates attempting to move prohibited drugs and controlled substances across West Africa and international markets. The latest operation involving illicit substances seized reflects broader enforcement efforts targeting smuggling channels and illegal imports.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, said the seizures included various prohibited narcotic substances intercepted through intelligence-driven operations coordinated by customs officers. He noted that the consignments were detected through enhanced cargo profiling, inspection procedures, and inter-agency collaboration.

According to the Customs Service, the intercepted substances included synthetic drugs and other prohibited materials concealed within imported consignments routed through different entry points. Officials stated that the seizures represented one of the largest recent recoveries linked to anti-narcotics operations within the country.

Adeniyi explained that the successful interception of the illicit substances seized demonstrated the growing effectiveness of intelligence-sharing mechanisms between Customs and NDLEA. He added that efforts to strengthen border enforcement and trade monitoring systems have contributed to recent operational successes against smuggling networks. (vanguardngr.com)

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended Customs officials for the operation and described the seizure as a major contribution to national anti-drug enforcement efforts. He said the recovered consignments would undergo further investigation and regulatory procedures in line with existing narcotics control laws.

Marwa noted that the continued interception of illicit substances seized at ports and border routes highlights the persistence of international trafficking attempts targeting Nigeria. He stressed the importance of sustained collaboration among security agencies in addressing the threats posed by narcotics trafficking and organised criminal networks.

Security officials further stated that investigations are ongoing to identify individuals and syndicates connected to the intercepted consignments. Analysts say the operation underscores increasing pressure on trafficking networks amid tighter surveillance and intelligence coordination across border enforcement agencies.

The value attached to the illicit substances seized also reflects the growing scale of anti-smuggling operations currently being carried out by security agencies across Nigeria’s maritime and border corridors. (vanguardngr.com)

Security analysts say the operation could strengthen public confidence in ongoing anti-drug enforcement efforts while disrupting supply chains linked to narcotics trafficking networks. The seizures may also reduce the circulation of harmful substances within local communities.

Experts note that improved collaboration between Customs and NDLEA could further enhance border security and intelligence-sharing capabilities against organised smuggling operations. The continued interception of illicit substances seized may also influence broader discussions on border management reforms and transnational crime prevention strategies.
