The Electricity generation increase has reached 4,300 megawatts from 3,951MW within two weeks, according to the Federal Government. The development, recorded between March 28 and April 10, reflects ongoing efforts to stabilise power supply and improve operational efficiency in Nigeria’s electricity sector.

Nigeria’s electricity sector has faced longstanding challenges, including inconsistent gas supply, infrastructure gaps, and limited generation capacity. Thermal power plants, which depend largely on gas, account for the bulk of electricity generation in the country.

In response, the Federal Government has implemented reforms to strengthen coordination across the gas-to-power value chain. These efforts are aimed at improving generation output and ensuring more stable electricity supply to end users.

According to a statement issued by Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser to the Minister of Power on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, the Electricity generation increase aligns with earlier assurances by Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, that supply would improve within a short timeframe.

Tunji stated that gas supply to thermal plants rose significantly during the period, increasing from about 605 million standard cubic feet per day to over 704 mmscfd. This improvement directly supported higher electricity output.

He added that mechanical availability peaked at over 7,796MW in early April, while operational availability rose from about 4,208MW to over 4,694MW. These figures indicate improved efficiency in converting available gas into electricity.

“In spite of minor fluctuations recorded on some days, the overall trajectory points to a gradual recovery in the power sector, driven largely by improved gas supply and better coordination among critical stakeholders,” Tunji said.

To sustain the progress, the Minister of Power recently inaugurated a Gas-to-Power Monitoring Committee tasked with addressing bottlenecks in gas delivery and enhancing collaboration between gas suppliers and power generation companies.

The Electricity generation increase reflects gradual progress in addressing key constraints within Nigeria’s power sector. Improved gas supply and coordination among stakeholders appear to be contributing to higher generation levels.

For consumers, the increase may support more stable electricity availability, although distribution and transmission limitations remain important factors in overall power delivery.

At a policy level, the development highlights the importance of sustained reforms, particularly in gas infrastructure and operational efficiency, to maintain and expand generation capacity.
