The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), has praised the transformation of the Alaba International Market, describing it as a reflection of Nigerian enterprise, innovation and resilience.
Musa spoke at the gala and award night held in Ikoyi, Lagos, to mark the unveiling of the “New Face of Alaba.” The minister said the newly commissioned commercial complexes represented more than physical development, describing them as evidence of the vision and determination of the market’s business community.
He congratulated the leadership of the International Market Association Electronics, IMAE, particularly its President-General, High Chief Dr Camilus Nnamdi Amajuoyi, for contributing to the market’s development. Musa also commended Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for supporting the transformation of the commercial hub.
According to him, the Alaba International Market has moved beyond its traditional identity as a marketplace to become a significant centre for electronics and technology. He said the market now contributes meaningfully to economic activity, employment creation and technological development. The minister also highlighted efforts to improve quality assurance and promote locally manufactured products within the market.
He said tackling counterfeit goods and maintaining quality standards would help strengthen consumer confidence and improve the market’s competitiveness. Musa reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to creating a secure and conducive environment where businesses can operate and grow.
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s focus on national security and economic stability, stressing the importance of cooperation between government, businesses and citizens. The minister urged traders, manufacturers and entrepreneurs operating within the Alaba International Market to maintain high standards and embrace innovation, integrity and excellence.
In a statement by the Ministry of Defence Public Relations Officer, Capt. Moses Yare, Musa encouraged members of the business community to sustain practices capable of strengthening Nigeria’s competitiveness and creating opportunities for future generations. The event also featured the recognition of individuals whose contributions have supported the development of the market over the years.
Representing Governor Sanwo-Olu at the event, Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat commended the market community for its contribution to Lagos State’s economy. Hamzat described the market as an important hub for commerce, innovation and employment generation. He praised the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of traders and other business operators within the community.
The deputy governor also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to reconstructing the road linking the Alaba International Market. According to him, the project would improve accessibility, ease business operations and further support economic activity in the area. The statement also recalled the longstanding relationship between the IMAE and the Nigerian Army, which has spanned several decades.
It said the relationship was facilitated by Musa during his early years as an army officer. Musa congratulated the Alaba business community on the unveiling of the new development and expressed optimism that the market would continue to expand its contribution to Nigeria’s economy.
