Abia agriculture economy is set for renewed expansion as Governor Alex Otti pushes for strategic collaboration with the National Agricultural and Agro-Industrial Development Initiative (NAADI) to boost food production and strengthen agribusiness in the state. The governor said the partnership aligns with efforts to reposition agriculture as a core driver of economic growth, employment, and industrial development in Abia.
Agriculture remains a key component of the Abia State development agenda, particularly as the government intensifies efforts to diversify the state’s revenue base beyond federal allocations. Recent policy direction has focused on improving local food production, supporting agro-processing, and encouraging private sector participation in farming activities.
The Abia agriculture economy also forms part of broader national discussions on food security and economic diversification, with emphasis on reducing import dependence and increasing local production capacity. States across Nigeria are increasingly exploring partnerships with development organisations to modernise agricultural systems and improve productivity.
Governor Otti made the proposal during a meeting with representatives of NAADI, where discussions centred on potential areas of collaboration in agricultural development and agro-industrial expansion.
He stressed that the Abia agriculture economy holds significant potential due to the state’s fertile land, commercial activity hubs, and access to regional markets. According to him, unlocking this potential requires structured partnerships that can drive investment and innovation in the sector.
Otti explained that the proposed collaboration would focus on strengthening the agricultural value chain, including production, processing, storage, transportation, and market access. He noted that the state government is committed to creating an enabling environment that encourages both local and external investors to participate in agriculture-driven enterprises.
The governor also highlighted the importance of integrating youth into agribusiness initiatives as a strategy to reduce unemployment and expand economic participation within the Abia agriculture economy.
Representatives of NAADI expressed willingness to support Abia’s agricultural transformation agenda, particularly in areas relating to capacity building, investment facilitation, and agro-industrial development.
The discussions further explored mechanisms for improving productivity through modern farming techniques and value-chain development aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and increasing market competitiveness.
The proposed collaboration could significantly influence the Abia agriculture economy by increasing production capacity and encouraging agro-industrial investment. If effectively implemented, it may also improve food availability and create employment opportunities across rural and urban communities.
Strengthening agricultural value chains is expected to support smallholder farmers, expand agribusiness opportunities, and enhance revenue generation for the state. It may also contribute to reducing reliance on imported food products while boosting local economic resilience.
