President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerian politicians across political parties to respect the rule of law and abide by the provisions of the Electoral Act.
The president made the call during an interfaith breakfast held at the State House in Abuja.
The meeting was attended by leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, members of the party’s National Working Committee, and officials of the Inter-Party Advisory Council.
The event brought together political stakeholders during the ongoing Ramadan and Lenten periods.
The president’s remarks come after he signed the amended Electoral Act into law following its approval by the National Assembly.
The legislation forms part of Nigeria’s legal framework guiding electoral processes and political participation.
Speaking at the gathering, Bola Ahmed Tinubu described himself as a committed democrat and urged political actors to accept democratic principles.
“We are all democrats and we all subscribed to this democracy voluntarily, willingly,” he said.
He added that the rule of law remains central to democratic governance and that political leaders should accept lawful decisions even when they disagree with them.
“The rule of law must prevail in any democracy. Majority will have their say and their way, and minority will have their say and might not have their way. That is the sweetness, the essence of democracy,” he stated.
The president also referred to his past involvement in Nigeria’s democratic struggle, including participation in the pro-democracy movement and activities of the National Democratic Coalition.
According to him, these experiences shaped his commitment to democratic governance and national unity.
The president emphasised that political parties and leaders should pursue their interests through lawful democratic processes rather than attempts to undermine established institutions.
He noted that party affiliation and political competition remain voluntary within Nigeria’s democratic system.
