The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected a mix of sunshine, cloudy skies and thunderstorms across Nigeria from Saturday through Monday, with several states expected to experience moderate rainfall and possible flash flooding, particularly in coastal communities. In its latest NiMet weather forecast released in Abuja on Friday, the agency advised residents to remain alert, warning that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in affected locations.
According to NiMet, northern Nigeria will experience sunny skies with patches of clouds during the morning hours. However, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna states early in the day. By the afternoon and evening, the agency forecast thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across parts of: Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa, Taraba
For the North Central region, morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected over parts of: Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
Later in the day, similar weather conditions are forecast for Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the FCT. In the southern region, moderate rainfall is expected during the morning over parts of: Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos, Bayelsa
NiMet added that moderate rainfall is likely across the entire southern region during the afternoon and evening.
The NiMet weather forecast indicates that northern states including Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba could experience morning thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall. As the day progresses, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected across parts of: Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa
For the North Central region, morning rainfall is anticipated over parts of Niger, Kwara and the Federal Capital Territory, while thunderstorms are expected across the region later in the afternoon and evening. Southern states are forecast to experience light rainfall during the morning in parts of: Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Rivers

The agency said thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall would spread across the region during the afternoon and evening. For the North Central zone, residents should expect sunny skies with patches of clouds in the morning before thunderstorms develop across the region later in the day. In southern Nigeria, cloudy conditions are expected, with light rainfall forecast during the morning over parts of: Edo, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers
Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are also expected across the southern states during the afternoon and evening.
As part of the NiMet weather forecast, the agency urged Nigerians to take necessary precautions before and during the expected storms. NiMet warned that strong winds could accompany thunderstorms and advised residents to secure loose outdoor objects to prevent damage or injury. The agency also cautioned that continuous rainfall along Nigeria’s coastal belt could increase the likelihood of flash flooding.
Residents were advised to: avoid driving or walking through flooded areas, refrain from driving during heavy rainfall where visibility is poor, disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms, stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injuries from falling branches or collapsing trees.
NiMet further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from the agency to support safe flight planning and operational decisions. The agency encouraged members of the public to continue monitoring official weather updates through NiMet’s communication channels as weather conditions evolve over the three-day forecast period.
