The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has condemned the reported obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from accessing Yelwata community in Benue State.
The party alleged that suspected thugs blocked Obi’s convoy on Tuesday as he attempted to visit families affected by recent killings in the community. According to the NDC, more than 270 people were reportedly killed in the violence.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the party alleged that the group responsible for blocking the convoy was led by an aide to Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia. The allegation has not been independently established.
The NDC described the incident as troubling, saying Obi’s planned visit was not for political campaigning. The party said he intended to mourn with affected families, listen to victims and offer solidarity following the killings.
According to the statement, Obi arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m. with plans to proceed to Yelwata. He alleged that his convoy was stopped by people chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.”
Obi said his purpose for visiting the community was to stand with families affected by the violence rather than engage in political activities.
“I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity,” he was quoted as saying.
The NDC said residents of Benue and Nigerians generally should be able to live peacefully, travel safely and access their farmlands without fear.
The party called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the reported obstruction. It also urged authorities to identify those responsible and ensure the safety of citizens and political leaders visiting communities affected by violence.
Although Obi was reportedly unable to reach Yelwata, the NDC said its thoughts and prayers remained with the victims, their families and the wider community.
The party further said it would continue advocating for the protection of lives and the safety of Nigerians across the country.
