The MAN Oron certification process has reached a major milestone after the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, secured Integrated Management System certification covering key operational and administrative standards. The certification was awarded following assessments of the institution’s quality management, occupational health and safety, and environmental management systems. The latest certification development is expected to strengthen confidence in the academy’s maritime training and institutional governance structure.
The Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, located in Akwa Ibom State, is one of the country’s major maritime training institutions responsible for developing manpower for Nigeria’s shipping and marine sectors. The academy provides training in nautical science, marine engineering, maritime transport, and related disciplines.
Integrated Management System certification is internationally recognised for institutions that successfully implement coordinated standards covering quality assurance, workplace safety, and environmental management practices. The latest MAN Oron certification comes amid ongoing efforts by Nigerian maritime institutions to improve training quality, international compliance, and competitiveness within the global maritime industry.
According to the academy’s management, the Integrated Management System certification covers ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management Systems, and ISO 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. The Rector of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Commodore Duja Effedua (retd.), described the achievement as a significant institutional milestone reflecting reforms and operational improvements within the academy.
Effedua stated that the MAN Oron certification demonstrated the institution’s commitment to international best practices in maritime education and administration. He noted that the certification process involved extensive audits, system evaluations, and compliance reviews conducted by external assessors.
According to the rector, the academy implemented improved administrative procedures, risk management systems, workplace safety measures, and environmental sustainability practices as part of the certification requirements.
The MAN Oron certification was also linked to broader efforts to reposition the institution for greater global relevance within the maritime education sector. Management stated that the recognition would strengthen the academy’s credibility among international maritime stakeholders and training partners.
Effedua further explained that achieving the certification required collaboration across academic, technical, and administrative departments to ensure compliance with global operational standards. He added that the institution would continue monitoring and improving its systems to maintain certification status.
The certification may improve the academy’s international standing and increase confidence among maritime industry stakeholders regarding the quality of training provided at the institution.
Industry observers say globally recognised certifications are increasingly important for maritime institutions seeking international partnerships, accreditation opportunities, and competitiveness within the shipping sector. The development also highlights broader efforts within Nigeria’s maritime industry to strengthen institutional standards, workforce development, and regulatory compliance.
