Two residents have been rescued after a Kubwa building collapse trapped them beneath the rubble of a one-storey residential property in the Federal Capital Territory.
The incident occurred at Kubwa 2/2, near Yellow Page, at about 11:30am on Friday.
The victims were reportedly trapped on the ground floor when the right section of the building suddenly collapsed.
They were rescued alive by emergency responders and taken to Kubwa General Hospital for medical attention. Both victims were said to be in stable condition.
The Head of Media and Public Relations of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa, confirmed the incident in a statement.
Isa said the emergency agency received a distress call at about 11:38am and immediately mobilised personnel to the location.
According to her, the affected property consists of six blocks of flats. Other occupants were away from the building when the incident occurred, helping to reduce the number of people exposed to the Kubwa building collapse.
“Two residents trapped in the rubble were successfully rescued and are currently receiving treatment at Kubwa General Hospital,” Isa said.
She added that no fatality was recorded during the incident, although several personal belongings and household items were destroyed.
The emergency response involved the FEMD, the Department of Development Control and the FCT Police Command.
The responding agencies secured the area following the Kubwa building collapse and commenced investigations to determine what caused the structural failure.
Authorities are expected to examine the condition of the building and establish whether construction or structural defects contributed to the collapse.
The incident has again drawn attention to the importance of structural integrity and compliance with approved building standards in residential developments across the FCT.
The two rescued residents remain under medical observation at Kubwa General Hospital as investigations into the cause of the collapse continue.
