The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rabiu Shuaibu, winner of the Kano bye-election held for the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency. Shuaibu secured a commanding victory in the poll conducted on Saturday, defeating candidates of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the Labour Party (LP).
The Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Umar Sani, announced the results after the conclusion of the collation process.
According to the official figures, Shuaibu polled 35,356 votes to emerge victorious in the Kano bye-election. His closest challenger, Lawal Garba-Haruna of the Allied Peoples Movement, received 268 votes, while Labour Party candidate Abubakar Yahaya-Muhammad scored 98 votes. Declaring the result, Prof. Sani stated that the election was duly contested and conducted in accordance with the law.
“The election was contested. That Rabiu Shuaibu of APC, having certified the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” he said.
The Kano bye-election was conducted to fill the vacant seat in the House of Representatives following the death of the constituency’s former representative, Muhammad Danjuma-Hassan of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). The vacancy necessitated a fresh election to ensure continued representation for constituents in Dawakin Kudu and Warawa federal constituency.
The outcome strengthens APC’s presence in the constituency and adds another legislative seat to the party’s representation. Political observers note that the large margin recorded by Shuaibu reflects strong voter support for the APC candidate in the constituency, while the opposition parties recorded relatively limited vote totals.
With the declaration of Rabiu Shuaibu as winner, the Kano bye-election has formally concluded, paving the way for the APC candidate to assume representation of Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives following the vacancy created by the death of Muhammad Danjuma-Hassan.
