Gunmen have attacked a police border checkpoint in Kebbi State, killing two police officers and destroying the security post, according to the state police command.

The attack occurred along the Bakin Ruwa–Maje border axis in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The area is part of the Nigeria–Benin Republic border corridor.

Security incidents have been reported in the corridor in recent months. Authorities say the area has experienced repeated attacks targeting security personnel stationed at border posts.

According to the Kebbi State Police Command, armed assailants attacked the police checkpoint and opened fire on officers stationed at the border post.

During the attack, two police officers were killed while the checkpoint facility was burnt by the attackers.

A police official confirmed the incident and stated that the situation was being handled by security authorities.

The official said, “They killed two of our officers and burnt down the checkpoint, but the police are on top of the situation. I will issue further details.”

The latest incident is the third reported attack along the Bakin Ruwa–Maje border area.

Previous attacks in the corridor reportedly targeted officers of the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service stationed at border posts in the same axis.

Authorities have previously raised concerns about the security situation in border communities in the area.

The Kebbi State Police Command said security personnel are responding to the situation and monitoring developments following the attack.

Further updates are expected from the command as investigations and security assessments continue.
