Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed strong interest in reading the Gowon memoir book, titled My Life of Duty and Allegiance, recently published by former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. He described the publication as an important addition to Nigeria’s historical documentation and national record.
Obasanjo made the remarks while responding to journalists during a visit to his residence when asked whether he had read the memoir. The book was officially presented to the public on May 19, 2026, in Abuja.
“I am anxious to get a copy,” the former President said.
He added that the Gowon memoir book reflects the experiences of a leader who played a significant role during some of Nigeria’s most critical historical moments since independence.
“General Gowon has spanned the most turbulent and eventful part of Nigerian history since independence. Giving us his account of events is very important, and he must be appreciated for the courage to do that,” Obasanjo stated.
Obasanjo also addressed his absence at the public presentation of the memoir, despite his longstanding personal and professional relationship with Gowon.
He explained that he had written a formal apology letter to the former military Head of State, referring to him respectfully as “my Oga,” to explain why he could not attend the event.
“I wrote a heartfelt letter of apologies to General Gowon, my Oga, for my inability to attend,” he said.
In the letter dated May 4, 2026, Obasanjo attributed his absence to an international commitment tied to his role as Co-chair of the InterAction Council.
He stated that he was scheduled to attend a meeting in Hong Kong on the same date as the book presentation.
“I will be unable to attend. As the Co-chair of the InterAction Council, I have a longstanding obligation to attend a scheduled meeting of the Council in Hong Kong, which coincides with the date, May 19, 2026, of your book presentation,” he wrote.
He further added that the commitment could not be easily postponed, noting: “As a fellow patriot, you will understand that this commitment is one I cannot easily defer,” he said.
The My Life of Duty and Allegiance memoir chronicles General Yakubu Gowon’s military career, leadership journey, and reflections on key national events that shaped Nigeria’s post-independence history.
The publication has drawn attention from senior statesmen and political figures, reflecting continued national interest in first-hand historical accounts from Nigeria’s past leaders. Obasanjo’s remarks further underscore the relevance of the Gowon memoir book in contributing to public understanding of Nigeria’s political evolution and governance history.
