Senator Garba Maidoki, representing Kebbi South Senatorial District, has officially resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing unresolved internal disputes and what he described as a lack of justice within the party. The Garba Maidoki Defection was formally announced during Senate plenary when his letter of resignation from the APC was read before lawmakers.
The announcement was made by Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session on behalf of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In the letter addressed to Akpabio, Maidoki informed the Senate leadership and his colleagues of his decision to leave the APC and align with the ADC. According to the senator, developments within the ruling party had raised serious concerns about his political future and aspirations.
Explaining the reason behind the Garba Maidoki Defection, the lawmaker said persistent internal disagreements within the APC influenced his decision to seek a new political platform.
He stated: “I am writing to inform Your Excellency, the President of the Senate, and the distinguished colleagues of my defection from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the African Democratic Congress, ADC.” He further noted that lingering disputes within the party had become a source of concern.
“My decision is based on the lingering internal crisis of the APC that has made my political inspiration a source of concern.”
Maidoki expressed confidence that the ADC would provide a stronger platform for advancing the interests of his constituents and contributing to national development. According to him, the party’s vision and political direction align more closely with his aspirations and the expectations of the people he represents.
“I believe that the ideas of the ADC are better for the benefit of my senatorial district and Nigeria at large.” The senator said his move was motivated by the desire to pursue a political platform that better reflects his goals and priorities.
The Kebbi South lawmaker also accused the APC of failing to live up to its proclaimed values of justice, peace and unity, particularly during the recently concluded party primary elections in Kebbi State. According to him, events surrounding the primaries exposed deep flaws in the party’s internal processes.
“The All Progressives Congress has not exhibited its slogan as justice, peace and unity, especially in Kebbi State during the just concluded primary elections.” He argued that the circumstances surrounding the primaries reinforced his belief that remaining in the party would not support his political ambitions.
The Garba Maidoki Defection adds to the growing wave of political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as parties continue to reposition themselves and attract influential political figures.
Maidoki maintained that the ADC presents a more suitable platform for achieving his political objectives and serving the interests of the people of Kebbi South. Concluding his letter, he formally notified the Senate of his decision, stating that his new political home offers the opportunity to pursue his aspirations under what he considers a fairer and more inclusive political environment.
“It is in this regard, therefore, that I wish to inform you of my defection to the African Democratic Congress, which I believe guarantees my political aspiration.”
