Four women were killed and nine others sustained injuries in a multiple‑vehicle road crash on the Agulu Lake, Nanka‑Agulu axis of the Awka‑Ekwulobia Road in Anambra State on Friday night, the Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed.
Road traffic crashes remain a major public safety concern in Nigeria, contributing to fatalities and injuries annually across many states.
The Federal Road Safety Corps is responsible for highway safety, response to accidents, and public education on road use.
According to a press statement by Margaret Onabe, Sector Public Education Officer of the FRSC Anambra State Command, the crash occurred at about 18:18 hours on Friday along the Agulu Lake, Nanka‑Agulu road.
The accident involved four vehicles: a Toyota Hiace (registration HAL676YG), a trailer, a shuttle bus (registration UKP274YA), and a Toyota Hilux.
Onabe said the crash killed four female adults and injured nine other persons. The injured comprised two male adults, four female adults, and three male children.
The FRSC attributed the crash to speed and loss of control while one of the vehicles was descending a hilly section of the road.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the victims were returning from a burial ceremony when the driver of the vehicle conveying them lost control.
Community members carried out an initial emergency response before officials arrived at the scene.
Onabe’s statement noted that all drivers fled the scene before rescue teams from the FRSC Nanka outpost arrived.
The FRSC’s confirmation of the casualty figures provides an official record of the incident involving multiple vehicles on a narrow road corridor known for hazardous conditions.
Emergency responders and safety officials continue to manage and clear the crash site.
