During a recent Easter outreach, Ebonyi Governor’s wife, Mrs. Mary‑Maudline Nwifuru, assisted indigent residents to pay hospital bills totaling N3.2 million at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

Sixteen patients cleared their medical debts, allowing them to receive timely care and return home without financial burden.

Many low-income Nigerians face obstacles in accessing healthcare, often delayed by unpaid medical bills.

Programs that pay hospital bills aim to remove such barriers and ensure that treatment is completed without families bearing the full cost.

Mrs. Nwifuru’s initiative aligns with previous social interventions from the governor’s office, targeting vulnerable groups across Ebonyi State.

These measures are designed to support public hospitals, welfare centres, and institutions serving the disadvantaged.

The Easter outreach saw Mrs. Nwifuru personally visiting patients in male and female surgical wards, encouraging them and urging them to stay hopeful.

She said, “Always pray for God’s help and keep your spirits high.”

Hospital officials confirmed that the initiative allowed 16 patients to pay hospital bills totaling N3.2 million.

Dr. Sorochi Otu, Head of Medical Social Work, described the gesture as “timely and impactful,” highlighting how it enabled patients to leave the hospital without financial strain.

Beyond the teaching hospital, support extended to the Rehabilitation Programme EFFATA in Ugbodo, Ebonyi Local Government Area, and the Trinitarian Foundation for Orphans and Helpless.

These centres received donations and financial aid, helping more indigent patients pay hospital bills and access necessary care.

Officials and beneficiaries praised the initiative, noting that it improved patient welfare and reduced the financial burden on families.

Mr. John Nweke of EFFATA said the intervention brought “relief and renewed hope” to residents.

Programs that pay hospital bills demonstrate the impact of targeted social interventions in healthcare.

By clearing medical debts, hospitals can operate more efficiently, and families avoid financial distress.

This approach underscores the need for sustainable healthcare funding and support for vulnerable populations across Nigeria.
