The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially updated the records for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), naming Morocco as the tournament’s champions after the Senegal national team’s results in the final were overturned by CAF’s Appeals Board.
The decision follows the AFCON 2025 final, which was held on January 18, 2026, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
In the match, Senegal had initially defeated Morocco 1‑0 after extra time, with Pape Guèye scoring the decisive goal. This outcome was widely reported following the tournament.
However, CAF’s Appeals Board later determined that events during the closing stages of the final constituted a forfeit under Article 84 of the AFCON Regulations.
The ruling noted that Senegal’s actions, including a temporary walk‑off by the team in protest over a contested penalty decision resulted in the match being recorded as a 3‑0 win for Morocco, with the title awarded accordingly.
Senegal’s player reaction during the final, including the protest, attracted significant attention at the time and prompted the subsequent disciplinary and appeals process by CAF.
Following the Appeals Board’s decision, Morocco was officially recognised as the champion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The update to the records reflects CAF’s formal administrative position on the outcome of the final match. The 2025 tournament, hosted by Morocco, involved 24 national teams and was contested between December 21, 2025, and January 18, 2026.
Official title recognition now lists Morocco as the 2025 AFCON champions in CAF’s historical records for the continental competition.
