Presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala has defended his previous criticisms of President Bola Tinubu, saying they should no longer dominate public discussions because they have become baseless in light of current realities, while insisting they were never false. Bwala made the remarks on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he responded to questions about statements he made before joining the Tinubu administration.
During the interview, Bwala expressed frustration over what he described as repeated attempts to revisit his past comments about the President. According to him, the presenter had raised the issue several times in previous interviews, asking why the discussion continued to revolve around statements he made before becoming part of the government.
He argued that the conversation should instead focus on issues that directly affect Nigerians, including the economy, education and national security. Bwala also referenced a reported letter from United States President Donald Trump commending President Tinubu’s efforts on security, saying such developments deserved greater public attention.
Speaking on the performance of the current administration, Bwala maintained that President Tinubu’s government has recorded measurable progress, particularly in strengthening cooperation among Nigeria’s security agencies. He said improved collaboration within the security architecture represents one of the administration’s notable achievements in addressing national security challenges.
When asked whether describing his former remarks as “baseless” meant they were lies, Bwala rejected the suggestion. He distinguished between the two expressions, insisting that although his previous comments no longer hold relevance in the present circumstances, they should not be interpreted as falsehoods. According to him, those earlier statements have simply become insignificant in the context of current developments.
Bwala also criticised the programme’s line of questioning, alleging that the presenter appeared to give greater prominence to opposition narratives while overlooking similar political developments involving opposition figures.
He cited Labour Party leader Peter Obi, noting that the former presidential candidate had changed political parties several times over the years. According to Bwala, similar scrutiny should be applied across the political spectrum rather than focusing solely on his previous criticisms of President Tinubu.
Concluding his remarks, Bwala maintained that continued debates over his past views serve little public interest. He urged greater attention to government policies, economic reforms, education, security and other issues that have a direct impact on the lives of Nigerians, insisting these are the conversations that matter most today.
