A commercial tricycle operator was feared dead after a heavy rainstorm caused flooding and widespread damage across parts of Anambra State on Monday night.

The Anambra rainstorm, which lasted several hours, reportedly damaged roofs and walls while floodwater inundated roads and created new gullies in erosion-prone locations.

Several routes were reportedly rendered difficult or impossible to access as the downpour intensified.

In Awka, the tricycle operator was said to have been swept away by floodwater while attempting to rescue a woman during the storm.

He was reportedly carried away near the Book Foundation area of the state capital.

His body was later discovered around Miracle Junction in the Ifite area, according to reports.

Residents who attempted to rescue him were reportedly unable to overcome the strength of the floodwater.

The storm also caused damage in Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area.

Strong winds accompanying the rainfall reportedly tore the roof covering the fuel pumps of a filling station from its structure.

The displaced roof subsequently fell onto a shuttle bus that was reportedly about to purchase fuel.

The impact nearly split the vehicle into two, according to accounts of the incident.

Operators of the filling station subsequently shut the facility.

Another incident was reported in the 2nd Market area of Ifite, Awka.

A resident said the storm caused considerable damage within his compound.

He reportedly heard a loud, thunderous sound during the rainfall before discovering that a perimeter fence had collapsed.

The fallen fence reportedly landed on an SUV parked inside the compound.

The incidents have renewed concerns about the recurring effects of intense rainfall, flooding and erosion across parts of Anambra.

Communities located in flood- and erosion-prone areas remain particularly vulnerable during periods of prolonged heavy rainfall.

The latest damage also highlights the risks posed to residents, motorists and property when intense storms coincide with already vulnerable drainage and erosion conditions.
