Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has described the naming of two Boeing 737-800NG aircraft after Chinua Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, as a powerful recognition of Igbo contributions to literature, leadership and national development. The aircraft unveiling was held in Lagos and carried out by United Nigeria Airlines.
The aircraft were named after two prominent Igbo figures. Chinua Achebe is globally celebrated for his literary masterpiece Things Fall Apart, while Obi Alfred Achebe is recognised for his traditional leadership and public service. Governor Otti said the gesture reflects deeper values of intellectual excellence, cultural pride and visionary leadership
Speaking at the event, Otti commended United Nigeria Airlines founder Obiora Okonkwo for honouring the two personalities. He said the decision goes beyond aviation and represents a celebration of Igbo achievement.
“For remembering to honour our people, you will be honoured,” Otti said.
The Chinua Achebe aircraft symbolises the legacy of one of Africa’s most influential writers, whose works shaped global understanding of African identity. The second aircraft honours Obi Alfred Achebe for his leadership in traditional governance, corporate excellence and public service.
Okonkwo explained that the naming was deliberate and symbolic, noting that Chinua Achebe elevated African literature globally, while Obi Alfred Achebe represents discipline, service and leadership. The ceremony attracted political leaders, aviation stakeholders, traditional rulers and business executives who praised the initiative.
Otti used the occasion to highlight progress on the proposed Abia Airport project, saying construction had reached an advanced stage. He also commended Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo for supporting private sector-driven reforms and backing the project. Keyamo said Otti personally pushed for the upgrade of the proposed Abia airstrip to a full international airport and confirmed federal support for counterpart funding.
Obi Alfred Achebe expressed gratitude, describing the honour as deeply meaningful. He reflected on his association with Chinua Achebe and prayed for the airline’s continued success. Chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, praised United Nigeria Airlines and described the initiative as proof of growing indigenous aviation capacity in West Africa.
He also commended Otti’s leadership, calling him a “beacon of hope for Nigeria.”
Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara also praised the initiative, describing it as a symbol of Igbo resilience and global relevance. He encouraged Igbo professionals and entrepreneurs to remain proud of their identity and continue contributing to national development.
The unveiling of the Chinua Achebe aircraft and its sister aircraft named after Obi Alfred Achebe marked a symbolic moment blending aviation, culture and regional pride. The event reinforced calls for increased investment in indigenous enterprise and highlighted the growing visibility of Igbo contributions to national development.
