The Nigerian Navy says it has intercepted illegal petroleum products and apprehended eight suspects during an operation on the Bonny River in Rivers State. The operation was conducted in coordination with other security agencies.

The interception took place along the Bonny River, a waterway known for commercial and transportation activities in Rivers State.

The Nigerian Navy routinely conducts patrols and enforcement operations to curb illegal activities, including fuel theft and smuggling, within Nigeria’s territorial waters.

Illegal petroleum product trade has been a concern for law enforcement agencies, as unregulated lifting and distribution of fuel can affect revenue and safety standards.

According to a statement from the Nigerian Navy, operatives conducting patrol and surveillance intercepted vessels conveying illegal petroleum products on the Bonny River.

The Navy said it seized the products and detained eight individuals believed to be involved in the illicit activity.

The suspects were taken into custody during the operation for further investigation and processing by appropriate authorities.

The Navy said the operation was conducted under its authority to enforce maritime laws and protect Nigeria’s waterways from illegal exploitation.

Officials noted that the detained suspects would be handed over to relevant law enforcement agencies to face appropriate legal processes.

The seized petroleum products were also taken into custody as part of evidence for further examination.

The Nigerian Navy said the operation involved collaboration with other security agencies tasked with safeguarding national resources and enforcing maritime regulations in Rivers State.

The coordination aimed to strengthen enforcement and reduce illegal activities on the nation’s waterways.
