Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, has approved funds to facilitate the release of abandoned corpses at the Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre in Enugu State, enabling families to retrieve the remains of their relatives.
According to reports, the initiative was announced by Nnaji as part of a personal intervention connected to his late mother, whose remains are currently at the same medical facility.
The move aims to assist families who have been unable to recover the bodies of their deceased relatives due to outstanding mortuary bills at the hospital.
The initiative began on March 3, 2026, and is expected to continue until March 20, 2026, when the remains of Nnaji’s mother are scheduled to leave the facility.
Nnaji stated that the intervention was designed to help families who had abandoned corpses of loved ones at the medical centre because they could not pay accumulated fees.
He encouraged families who may have relatives at the facility to contact the mortuary attendants for verification and possible release of the remains.
“If you know any family who wish to take advantage of this development, kindly direct them to the mortuary attendant at Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre, Enugu State, for immediate verification,” he said.
Residents and observers in the state commended the gesture, describing it as assistance for families struggling to retrieve the bodies of deceased relatives from the facility.
