The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that Senator Ireti Kingibe will not return to the Senate in 2027, asserting that the lawmaker has “no project to show” for her tenure, he said on Monday in Port Harcourt.
Senator Ireti Kingibe represents the Federal Capital Territory at the National Assembly. She was elected to the Senate and previously served in the House of Representatives.
Senatorial seats are contested during the general elections, and incumbents often seek re-election. Remarks about the prospects of lawmakers returning to office can influence political discourse ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking at an event in Rivers State, Wike, who is also a senior figure in the Peoples Democratic Party, said Kingibe had “no project to show” for her time as a senator and that this was a factor in her prospects for 2027.
He said his assessment was based on what he described as the absence of identifiable accomplishments credited to Kingibe’s legislative work.
Wike’s comments were made in the context of his wider remarks at the event, which also touched on party strategy and political developments ahead of the next general elections.
Senator Kingibe, in earlier interviews in January, said that Mr. Wike would not determine her political future and that electoral outcomes in the FCT were decided by voters.
She said that no individual, including the Minister of the FCT, had the power to decide whether she would be re-elected.
Wike’s remarks add to public discussion about representation and performance in office as political stakeholders prepare for the 2027 electoral cycle.
Senator Kingibe’s position on her future plans has been publicly stated in her own comments earlier this year.
