Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, announcing the move in a statewide broadcast on Friday.

Party defections by serving governors have shaped Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress are the two largest political parties in Nigeria, with governors from both parties leading various states.

In a broadcast to the people of Adamawa State on Friday, Governor Fintiri confirmed his exit from the PDP and his membership of the APC.

He said he and members of his cabinet, as well as other officials of the PDP in Adamawa State, moved to the APC.

Following the announcement, PDP flags were removed at the Government House in Yola and the governor’s office.

Fintiri highlighted his service under the PDP, noting the support he received from citizens in the 2019 and 2023 gubernatorial elections.

He said the decision to join the APC was in the “developmental interest” of the people of Adamawa State and emphasised the need for political alignment that could support the state’s progress.

The governor called on supporters in all 226 wards and 21 local government areas of the state to register with the APC.

Adamawa State commissioners also confirmed their defection alongside the governor.

Earlier in the week, the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Wesley Bathiya, and 15 lawmakers resigned from the PDP, presenting their letters of resignation in plenary.

Fintiri’s defection increases the number of serving governors in the APC. Any changes to party affiliations among elected officials in Adamawa State will be reflected in the state’s political alignments and ahead of preparations for the 2027 elections.
