President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026 into law, the Presidency said on Wednesday.
The bill’s assent follows its passage by both chambers of the National Assembly and now forms part of Nigeria’s legal framework governing elections.
The Presidential assent letter was communicated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, who confirmed in a statement that the 2026 Electoral Act Amendment has been signed by the President.
The SGF said the President’s action ensures the legal readiness of the framework ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With the President’s assent, the Electoral Act 2026 (as amended) is now effective as the governing law for the conduct of national and state elections, including provisions related to timetable, voter registration, poll procedures and transmission of results.
The SGF said the act will guide the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other stakeholders in preparing for the 2027 electoral cycle.
The amendment process saw the Executive and Legislature collaborate in reviewing various sections of the 2022 Electoral Act, refining legal provisions in accordance with constitutional requirements and electoral practice.
In the statement issued by Akume, the SGF underscored that the President’s assent to the bill aligns with established legislative and constitutional protocols for enacting laws.
The statement said the approval of the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026 demonstrates the government’s commitment to procedural readiness for upcoming elections.
The act includes provisions on election timetables, processes for nomination of candidates, election monitoring, collation and result transmission procedures, and other matters connected with the conduct of elections across the federation, according to the published report.
