President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally decorated Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police at a ceremony held at the State House, Abuja on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
The ceremony followed the submission and acceptance of the resignation of the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The decoration event took place in the President’s office at about 4:00 p.m., where President Tinubu pinned the new police insignia on Disu’s uniform.
The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and the outgoing IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.

Under the amended Police Act, which provides a fixed four-year tenure for Inspectors-General of Police irrespective of age, he may remain in office until 2030.
Egbetokun submitted his letter of resignation to President Tinubu on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, citing family matters that require his full attention.
In accepting the resignation, the President commended Egbetokun for his service to the nation.
Following the decoration, Disu proceeded to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he assumed duty as Acting Inspector-General of Police.
Shortly after his decoration at the Presidential Villa, he took his first salute from members of the Quarter Guard and other police officers at the headquarters.
In accordance with the Police Act 2020, the appointment of Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police will be considered by the Nigeria Police Council at a meeting convened by the President, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation
