President Bola Tinubu was absent from the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day event in Abuja on Thursday, January 15, 2026, with Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima representing him at the annual ceremony, officials say.
Tinubu is in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) attending the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2026, according to government sources.
The event was held at the cenotaph of the Unknown Soldier in Eagle Square, Abuja, and was organised by the Ministry of Defence to honour members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) who have died in service, including those who took part in World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, and ongoing internal security operations.
Shettima led the proceedings, which include wreath‑laying and tribute activities.
Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day is observed each January 15 and reflects Nigeria’s choice to mark the end of the Civil War and honour its military history.
The celebration aims to recognise both fallen heroes and serving personnel for their loyalty, bravery and sacrifices in safeguarding the nation.
In his absence, Tinubu sent messages of support and gratitude through Shettima, acknowledging the courage and professionalism of Nigeria’s military personnel.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to supporting troops and improving their welfare, as well as that of the families of those who paid the ultimate price.
Officials and military leaders present at the ceremony highlighted recent successes by the armed forces in various security operations and called on Nigerians and organisations to continue supporting servicemen and women.
The event also serves as a platform to encourage financial and moral support for veterans and families of the fallen.
Shettima’s role in leading the ceremony signalled continuity in government respect for the armed forces, even as Tinubu’s international engagement drew his physical absence.
Observers note that Nigeria’s commemoration reflects both remembrance of past sacrifices and recognition of the modern military’s role in confronting terrorism, insurgency and other security threats facing the country.
The Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day holds national significance, with government leaders, service chiefs, veterans and citizens taking part in prayer services, moments of silence, and public tributes to honour Nigeria’s military heritage and ongoing efforts to safeguard national unity and peace.
