The Benue State Police Command has arrested 41 suspects in connection with alleged illegal slaughterhouse operations within Makurdi, the state capital, in response to viral social media claims, police officials say.

The arrests were confirmed on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, by the police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, who said the suspects were taken into custody following coordinated raids on locations in Awe Street, Wurukum, and Wadata communities of Makurdi.

Social media posts circulating within the state purported that several individuals were being held and abused at alleged “slaughterhouse” sites, including eyewitness accounts of people being taken by motorcycle riders and forced into buildings where they encountered others.

One unidentified person claimed that he was taken on December 25 while returning from a church programme and brought to a room where he encountered about 10 girls, describing the environment as “a dreadful place.”

Another account shared online described a similar situation involving a daughter being lured toward the same street by a motorcyclist before she escaped, although details remain unverified.

Responding to the allegations, DSP Edet said authorities organised raids on the alleged sites and conducted screening of 41 suspects, who were subsequently detained. “I’m aware of this, and the same has been forwarded for action.

A raid of black spots was organised at Awes Street, Wurukum and Wadata, where 41 suspects were arrested for screening,” the police spokesperson said.

Edet’s statement did not specify the exact nature of alleged offences linked to the suspected locations nor indicate whether evidence of organised criminal activity was recovered during the operations.

Details on potential charges or the status of investigations were not available at the time of publication.

The police action follows increasing public concern over posts alleging criminal activity tied to purported slaughterhouses in Makurdi, prompting authorities to intervene and investigate.

Community leaders and residents have in recent weeks shared videos and testimonies online, escalating calls for law enforcement to probe the claims.

Law enforcement officials have not yet released detailed findings from the raids, and it is unclear whether suspects will face prosecution or if further detentions are anticipated pending ongoing inquiries.

Police urged the public to provide credible information to aid investigations and dispel unverified claims, emphasising the need for responsible reporting of sensitive issues.

The development highlights the challenges police face in responding to social media‑driven allegations and underscores broader concerns about public safety and the proliferation of unverified reports in the state’s online spaces. Further official updates are expected as investigations continue.
