Vice President Kashim Shettima has welcomed Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas into the All Progressives Congress (APC) and urged the governors of Bauchi and Adamawa states to reconsider their political positions and align with the ruling party, senior party officials said. The remarks came during a reception in Jalingo marking Kefas’s formal defection.
Shettima described Kefas’s move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC as a personal and touching decision that reflects growing confidence in the ruling party’s agenda.
He said the expansion of APC’s influence in the North-East geopolitical zone was a cause for pride and expressed optimism that other leaders in the region would follow suit at the appropriate time.
At the event, Shettima officially declared Governor Kefas as leader of the APC in Taraba State and urged party members to rally behind him to promote unity and democratic dividends for residents.
He noted that collective support for the governor would encourage efforts to strengthen development and cohesion within the state.
Governor Kefas said his decision to join the APC, along with members of his cabinet and lawmakers at various levels, was driven by a desire to reposition Taraba for prosperity rather than personal political ambition.
He described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a transformational leader whose vision aligns with the state’s development goals, and said Taraba’s alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda would benefit its citizens.
At the reception, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, National Chairman of the APC, described Kefas’s defection as a strategic move taken in the best interest of the people of Taraba State.
He said the state’s abundant resources and potential for growth would be better harnessed through alignment with the ruling party.
Shettima’s appeal to the governors of Bauchi and Adamawa reflects broader political efforts to consolidate APC’s influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The vice president expressed confidence that leaders and stakeholders in these states would reassess their political affiliations in a manner that supports inclusive governance and development.
