The Lagos State Government has announced that rehabilitation of sections of the Lekki‑Epe Expressway will begin on Sunday, January 25, 2026. The project covers about 20 kilometres of the road and is expected to last about 64 days, with traffic diversion plans in place to help motorists.

The Lekki‑Epe Expressway connects key commercial and residential areas from Lekki to Epe in Lagos State. It carries heavy daily traffic, and periodic repairs have been needed to improve road safety and ride quality.

The recent rehabilitation plan was postponed from its original start date in December 2025 after concerns about severe traffic congestion during the festive season. Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu directed contractors to reschedule work for early 2026.

The rehabilitation will cover Sections 2 and 3 of the expressway, spanning from Admiralty Way Junction to the Jubilee Bridge section in Ajah, within the Eti‑Osa Local Government Area.

Officials say the work will be carried out in phases, section by section. Both carriageways will be upgraded, but only one will be actively worked on at a time to allow for continued traffic movement where possible.

Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the State Commissioner for Transportation, said the work will focus first on the Lagos‑bound carriageway from Chevron to Igbo‑Efon in the initial phase.

To keep traffic moving during construction, the government has put in place a traffic management plan:

Morning peak hours (4:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.): Two lanes will be open for traffic heading towards Lagos and one lane for those going to Epe.

Evening peak hours (1:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.): Two lanes will be free for traffic going towards Epe with one lane open for vehicles heading to Lagos.

Officials said road shoulders on the Epe‑bound side are being prepared to provide more space for diverted traffic.

The government advised motorists heading towards Lagos to use the Coastal Road from Ogombo via Abraham Adesanya as a possible alternative to avoid delays on the expressway while the works are underway.

Another suggested route links the Coastal Road from Eleganza via Orchid Road through Lafiaji and Naale Street to ease travel during the traffic diversion stages.

The Special Adviser on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, said the state will deploy traffic management staff, clear signs and proper lighting along the route to help motorists during the construction period.

Officials said the phased plan aims to reduce inconvenience and maintain smoother traffic flow while the rehabilitation work is completed.

Rehabilitation work will begin on January 25, 2026 and is expected to continue for around 64 days. Authorities have asked commuters to plan journeys carefully and follow all traffic guidance during this period.
