Maiduguri, Borno State — Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has projected that more than two million Nigerians in the state could be registered as members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the party’s ongoing digital membership registration exercise, party officials and sources say.
Zulum made the projection on Sunday, January 11, 2026, shortly after receiving his own APC digital membership card during the official commencement of the exercise at the party’s state secretariat in Maiduguri, saying the initiative is critical to strengthening internal democracy and broadening party engagement.
The governor was formally presented with his membership card by the Borno State APC Chairman, Bello Ayuba, following registration by his ward agent from Aiari Unit 003.
In attendance were other key party figures, including Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur and APC Deputy National Chairman, Ali Bukar Dalori, who also completed their registration.
Governor Zulum said the digital platform would expand the party’s grassroots reach and enhance internal governance. “Strengthening internal democracy is key to a stable democracy, and therefore I call on all members of our party to register via the e‑platform. Let us expand our membership.
I believe Borno State can register more than two million people for the APC,” he said, urging stakeholders to work “assiduously” to ensure the success of the drive.
The APC’s digital membership card initiative aims to create a centralised and verifiable database of party members, which party officials say will improve communication, organisation, and political engagement across the state. Officials stated that the database will support planning for upcoming elections and internal party processes.
In his remarks, Ayuba praised Governor Zulum’s leadership and mobilisation efforts, noting the governor’s sustained backing for party strengthening efforts in Borno.
The event drew attendance from senior lawmakers and party officials, including Senate Chief Whip Tahir Moguno, Senators Mohammed Ali Ndume and Kaka Shehu Lawan (SAN), as well as the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan.
Political observers say the digital registration exercise reflects broader efforts by the APC to modernise its organisational infrastructure and bolster membership verification ahead of major electoral contests, including the 2027 general elections.
The centralised registration is seen by analysts as a step toward reducing disputes over membership figures and reinforcing party legitimacy.
The drive forms part of internal reforms within the APC’s digital transformation framework to ensure party processes are transparent and inclusive from the grassroots up. If Zulum’s projection is realised, it would significantly expand the APC’s registered base in Nigeria’s North‑East, solidifying Borno’s role as a key political constituency for the ruling party.
