Armed bandits attacked Kabe community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, killing a 75‑year‑old woman, residents and local reports say. The attack happened late on Tuesday, January 14, 2026, and forced many villagers to flee in fear of further violence.

The victim, Amina Abu‑Shaki, was identified as the wife of the Sarkin Noma of Kabe community. Witnesses said bandits arrived in large numbers around 8 p.m., firing guns and creating panic. Amina was reportedly shot as she hid from the attackers and died on the spot.

Residents told reporters the gang moved quickly through the village, firing shots and forcing families to run for safety. Some villagers said the attackers also looted shops and stole food supplies before leaving the area, though no abductions have been confirmed in this incident.

The bandit assault is the latest in a series of violent incidents in remote communities of Borgu and other parts of Niger State, where insecurity has disrupted farming, trade and daily life. In recent weeks, other villages in the area have been hit by similar raids, leaving homes abandoned and families displaced.

Local authorities have been challenged to respond effectively to these attacks, and many residents are calling for greater security presence to protect communities near Kainji National Park and surrounding forests, where bandit groups are believed to operate from hideouts.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has previously ordered relocation of hamlets around high‑risk areas as part of efforts to reduce civilian exposure to banditry and forest‑based violence, but villagers say insecurity persists despite these measures.

Human rights groups and local leaders have condemned the latest killing, urging security agencies to step up patrols and protect vulnerable populations in rural parts of the state. Analysts warn that continued attacks could further displace residents and worsen humanitarian conditions if decisive action is not taken.
