The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review the 2027 general election timetable to avoid a clash with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the party said on Saturday.

In a statement signed by the party’s National Chairman, Engr. Yabagi Yusuf Sani, the ADP welcomed INEC’s announcement that it had begun steps to realign the previously released election timetable, the party said.

The statement was titled “On the Need for INEC’s Review of the Election Timetable in Deference to Ramadan.”

According to the statement, the ADP said that scheduling major national elections during Ramadan could affect voter participation, logistical coordination and national inclusivity, given the significance of the period for Muslim worship and fasting.

The party said such timing has “significant implications for voter participation, logistical coordination, and national inclusivity.”

The ADP welcomed INEC’s announcement that it had begun steps toward a legal and constitutional realignment of the previously announced timetable, saying this reflects “institutional responsiveness to public concerns and sensitivity to the broader national interest.”

In its statement, the party urged INEC to continue consultations with stakeholders and ensure that the final timetable “promotes maximum voter turnout, inclusivity, and stability.”

The ADP also called on political parties, civil society organisations, religious leaders and citizens to “support a peaceful, lawful and orderly electoral process as adjustments are considered.”

INEC earlier released a timetable fixing February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections and March 6, 2027, for governorship and state assembly polls, a schedule that stakeholders have noted falls within the projected Ramadan period.

The ADP reiterated its position that Nigeria’s democracy is strongest when inclusivity, fairness and peace guide collective action, according to the statement.
