The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned an alleged attack on its leaders, including Mr. Peter Obi, describing the incident as a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic process.
The party’s condemnation was contained in a statement issued by Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC National Publicity Secretary, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
According to the ADC, the alleged attack occurred on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, in Benin City, Edo State.
The party said Obi and other leaders, including former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, were moving from the party’s secretariat to the residence of a party leader when armed individuals reportedly opened fire.
The party described the shooting at the gate and the damage to several vehicles as an alleged assassination attempt on senior ADC figures.
The ADC’s statement said the incident followed warnings reportedly issued last year by the Governor of Edo State, advising Obi not to visit the state.
The party said it did not anticipate that earlier threats would escalate to an attempt on lives of political leaders.
It did not provide independent verification of the alleged attack or officially attribute responsibility.
In his statement, Abdullahi described the reported episode as “a grave and disturbing development” and said that acts of violence and intimidation undermine the will of the people and democratic values.
The ADC said such actions “stain our democracy” and must be condemned by all who believe in freedom.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to political engagement, stating: “The ADC will neither bow nor retreat.
We will stand firm, speak without fear, and continue the peaceful struggle for a Nigeria where the opposition is not punished, and every citizen is free.”
The statement did not outline specific actions beyond the party’s continuing political engagement.
The reported attack occurred amid heightened political activities linked to the formal declaration of Barrister Olumide Akpata into the ADC in Edo State.
Party officials said the group had been targeted shortly after the event concluded, though independent confirmation remains pending.
Authorities from security agencies have not yet issued a public statement on the incident at the time of this report.
