The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has said that the planned acquisition of M-346 fighter aircraft from Italy will strengthen Nigeria’s Airpower and improve its ability to respond to security threats.

The aircraft deal is part of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) modernisation programme and focuses on improving combat capability and training.

Air Marshal Aneke made the remarks while engaging officials of Leonardo Aircraft Division in Milan, Italy, on the M-346 fighter ground attack aircraft programme. He described the acquisition as a significant step in renewing the NAF’s combat capability.

He said the new aircraft will enhance precision strike operations, improve pilot training outcomes and reinforce Nigeria’s presence as a deterrent in the West African region.

The Air Force delegation met with representatives from Leonardo and officials from the Ministries of Defence and Finance on January 19 and 20, 2026, to deepen cooperation on the fighter aircraft programme. Senior NAF officers accompanied the CAS during the discussions.

At the Leonardo Helicopter Division, Aneke also assessed advanced technology platforms that are already in use by the NAF, such as AW-109 helicopters. He commended Leonardo for its ongoing support and professionalism.

Expected Impact on NAF Capabilities

According to the CAS, the aircraft will help the Nigerian Air Force:

Execute more effective precision strike missions against internal security threats.

Expand and improve advanced training for pilots, engineers and technical staff.

Bolster regional deterrence through a modern and capable combat fleet.

He emphasised the importance of synchronising aircraft delivery with the readiness of air bases in Nigeria to ensure smooth induction of the platforms into service.

Air Marshal Aneke said early and inclusive training for pilots, engineers and support staff will be essential to maximise the operational readiness of the new aircraft. He also discussed plans for a possible Leonardo Support Office in Nigeria to improve aircraft availability and long-term sustainment.

The CAS noted that timely delivery of aircraft, spare parts and ground support equipment is critical for rapid operational readiness and sustained mission effectiveness.

Training and readiness: Enhanced training may improve NAF operational capacity and strategic presence.

The Nigerian Air Force and Leonardo will continue to finalise delivery schedules and support arrangements. Further coordination between NAF, the Ministries of Defence and Finance, and Leonardo is expected to ensure successful aircraft induction and long-term sustainment.
