The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has cleared two separate truck incidents that disrupted vehicular movement on Ikorodu Road and at National-Ashade, restoring traffic in the affected areas.
The incidents occurred on Sunday and involved a loaded mixer truck that fell across the Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, corridor on Ikorodu Road, as well as a MACK truck carrying two 20-foot containers that tilted while attempting a U-turn at National-Ashade.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency’s Cobra Response Team stationed at Onipanu was deployed to the Ikorodu Road incident at about 5:53 p.m. following a distress alert.
According to him, responders arrived at Palm Grove inward Obanikoro and found a mixer truck belonging to Ecocrete Construction Company lying across the BRT corridor after a lone accident. A preliminary assessment indicated that reckless driving and overspeeding might have contributed to the incident, while the driver was reported to have fled the scene.
LASEMA, working with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, and the Nigeria Police Force, secured the area, managed traffic and began recovery operations to remove the truck from the BRT corridor.
A second incident occurred at about 11:21 p.m. at National-Ashade, where LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team from Cappa responded to another distress call.
The team found a MACK truck carrying two 20-foot containers that had reportedly suffered a tyre burst while attempting a U-turn. The vehicle tilted and obstructed about 80 per cent of the roadway.
Oke-Osanyintolu said responders immediately secured the scene and diverted traffic to minimise the risk of a secondary accident. LASEMA and LASTMA personnel subsequently managed traffic while awaiting heavy-duty recovery equipment.
With assistance from a private crane, two forklifts, LASEMA’s lowbed and a private tow truck, the two containers were recovered and loaded onto the agency’s lowbed. The MACK truck was then towed to the LASTMA yard in Oshodi.
The affected road was subsequently cleared and reopened to motorists.
The LASEMA permanent secretary confirmed that no death or injury was recorded in either incident. He commended the agency’s Cobra and Eagle Response Teams and the collaborating agencies for their prompt intervention, saying the response helped prevent prolonged traffic congestion and possible secondary accidents.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged operators of articulated vehicles and heavy-duty trucks to maintain their vehicles properly, obey speed limits and traffic regulations, and exercise greater caution while driving on Lagos roads.
He also encouraged residents to report emergencies promptly through the 767 and 112 toll-free emergency lines to facilitate rapid response.
