Nigerian Army troops have cleared a terrorist hideout in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, recovering weapons, ammunition and motorcycles from the location.
The operation was conducted by troops of the COAS Special Intervention Battalion 7, Sector 2, under Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
The offensive forms part of ongoing military efforts to dismantle terrorist camps and restrict the activities of armed groups across the North-West.
Military sources said the troops moved into several areas identified as potential terrorist strongholds following intelligence on the activities of armed groups.
The areas covered included Manu, Alkasim and Kandam villages, as well as the Magarya forest axis.
According to the sources, troops encountered terrorists operating from an enclave within the Magarya forest.
A confrontation followed, forcing the terrorists to abandon the position and retreat further into the forest.
Troops subsequently carried out a search of the area and surrounding locations. The operation led to the discovery of weapons and other materials believed to have been used by the group.
Among the items recovered were a PKT machine gun, AK-47 rifles and a large quantity of 7.62 x 54mm belted ammunition.
Several motorcycles and assorted logistical materials were also recovered during the operation.
The military said the recovery could reduce the terrorists’ ability to sustain operations within the area.
The motorcycles were believed to have provided the group with mobility through forest routes and remote communities that are difficult to access by conventional vehicles.
Following the clearance operation, troops have continued patrols around the affected areas.
The military is also conducting follow-up operations to prevent the terrorists from regrouping or returning to previously occupied positions.
The development comes amid intensified security operations across the North-West, where military formations have continued efforts to disrupt armed groups and protect vulnerable communities.
Authorities warned terrorists and their collaborators operating in the area to abandon their activities, saying security forces would continue efforts to dismantle their networks.
The troops also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting residents, securing communities and restoring confidence among people affected by insecurity.
The operation in Tangaza represents another effort to deny terrorist groups access to forest locations that could be used as bases for attacks, movement and logistical activities.
