The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified its grassroots mobilisation ahead of the September 26, 2026, local government elections in Enugu State, taking its campaign to Ezeagu Local Government Area.
The campaign was led by the Enugu State Chairman of the party, Dr Johnpaul Anih, and attracted party leaders, candidates, supporters and residents. The campaign team gathered at Community Secondary School, Obunofia Ndiuno, where Anih addressed supporters and outlined the party’s plans for grassroots governance.
Anih, who was accompanied by members of the State Working Committee and other party leaders, said the NDC was seeking to provide credible, accountable and people-oriented leadership across the state. He said the party’s candidates had been selected based on competence, integrity, capacity and commitment to community development.
Anih appealed to residents to support the NDC and vote for its candidates during the Ezeagu council election, promising that an NDC administration would prioritise the welfare and development of residents. He also called on the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) and security agencies to ensure a level playing field for all participating parties.
According to him, the September 26 election must be free, fair, transparent and credible. The NDC chairman expressed confidence in the party’s prospects, saying its growing acceptance in Ezeagu and other parts of Enugu reflected the electorate’s desire for an alternative.
However, he warned against attempts to manipulate the electoral process. Anih said the party would resist electoral malpractice and intimidation across the 20 electoral wards in Ezeagu. He urged supporters and voters to remain peaceful and vigilant while protecting their votes.
Earlier, the NDC Chairman in Ezeagu, Hon. Nonso Ukwuani, thanked the state leadership for taking the campaign to the local government. Ukwuani described the leadership provided by the Johnpaul Anih-led State Working Committee as strong and urged residents to support the party’s candidates. The NDC chairmanship candidate, Hon. Robert Ezinwa, also thanked the party leadership for the confidence placed in him.
Ezinwa pledged that, if elected, his administration would focus on education, agriculture, youth and women empowerment, healthcare and other critical sectors. He promised to overhaul the local education system, strengthen support for farmers, expand opportunities for young people and women, and improve access to quality healthcare.
NDC chieftains, including Hon. Maurice Ebue and Hon. Ann Okeke, urged Ezeagu residents to vote for candidates they described as capable of delivering grassroots development. Ebue reaffirmed the party’s commitment to inclusive governance and called on supporters to take the campaign message to every ward, polling unit and community.
He also urged voters to participate peacefully and protect their votes on election day. The campaign ended with the formal presentation of Ezinwa, his running mate, Barr. Ifeanyi Okafor, and the party’s 20 councilorship candidates to the gathering. The party said the mobilisation would continue across Ezeagu ahead of the Ezeagu council election scheduled for September 26.
