The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man identified as Moferewa Maiye for allegedly impersonating an officer of the Service in Abuja. Maiye, who claimed to be from Agbajojun Village in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, was reportedly tracked to his hideout around NITEL Junction, along Adetokunbo Ademola Way, Wuse II, Abuja.
According to a security source, the suspect was arrested wearing a DSS tactical uniform and allegedly carrying a fake pistol. The DSS impersonation arrest followed credible intelligence received by the Service concerning his alleged activities in the area. The source said Maiye allegedly used the uniform and fake weapon to intimidate commuters and motorists while demanding money from them.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly told investigators that his brother, identified as Monday Maiye, was a DSS personnel who died several years ago. He allegedly claimed that the uniform and other items found in his possession belonged to his late brother.
The circumstances surrounding how the suspect obtained the DSS uniform and associated equipment remain under investigation. Maiye remains in custody while investigators question him and examine the allegations against him.
The investigation is also expected to establish how long the suspect had allegedly been involved in impersonating security personnel and whether other individuals were involved in the activities under investigation. The case has drawn attention to the security risks associated with the unauthorised use of official uniforms and equipment. Security personnel rely on identifiable uniforms and authority to perform duties, making their alleged misuse capable of creating opportunities for intimidation and unlawful demands.
The source said the DSS impersonation arrest underscored the Service’s concern about individuals who allegedly pose as security personnel to intimidate members of the public and engage in criminal activities. The DSS operation also highlights the importance of verifying the identity of individuals presenting themselves as security officers, particularly when they demand money or attempt to exercise official authority.
Investigators are continuing to establish the source of the uniform and other items recovered from Maiye. The outcome of the investigation will determine the next steps regarding the allegations against the suspect. As of the time of filing the report, Maiye remained in DSS custody while questioning and further investigations continued.
