Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday received a delegation of prominent political figures at his residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as discussions around Nigeria’s political future continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections. Among those who visited the elder statesman were Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, and former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
The Obasanjo Makinde meeting has drawn public attention following comments by Governor Makinde, who disclosed that the engagement focused on matters of national importance and the country’s political direction ahead of the next general election. Sharing details of the visit in a post on his X account, Makinde described the discussions as timely, noting that the delegation sought the counsel of the former President on issues affecting Nigeria.
“Earlier today, we visited Baba, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, in Abeokuta. Our discussions centred on important national issues in view of the upcoming general election,” Makinde wrote.
The Oyo State governor also expressed appreciation for Obasanjo’s guidance, describing the former President’s advice as valuable at a critical period in the nation’s history. “We appreciate Baba for his wise counsel at this crucial time in our nation’s history,” he added.
Makinde, who is the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) for the 2027 election, did not disclose the specific issues discussed during the meeting. Although no official communiqué was issued after the engagement, the gathering of influential political leaders has fuelled interest in ongoing consultations ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Obasanjo has remained an influential voice in Nigeria’s political landscape since leaving office, frequently receiving political leaders, public office holders and national stakeholders for consultations on governance and national development.
