The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed reports alleging that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, directed officers to shoot anyone found carrying illegal firearms, describing the claims as false and a distortion of the IGP’s actual remarks.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the police said the report, which circulated widely across social media platforms, misrepresented comments made by the IGP during a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Benue State.
According to the Force Headquarters, the IGP never issued a “shoot-on-sight” directive during the meeting. The police explained that the viral report took the Inspector-General’s comments out of context and presented them in a misleading manner capable of creating unnecessary panic among members of the public. The Force stressed that Police clarify IGP remarks to prevent misinformation from undermining public confidence in law enforcement.
The statement explained that the Inspector-General merely reminded officers that only duly authorised security personnel are legally permitted to carry firearms.
He also highlighted the growing threat posed by illegal weapons, noting that such firearms are frequently used by criminals involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, cult-related violence and other serious offences. According to the police, the IGP’s comments focused on strengthening lawful enforcement against criminal activities rather than authorising the indiscriminate use of force.
The Force further explained that the IGP reminded officers that the use of firearms remains regulated under Force Order 237, which clearly outlines the circumstances under which police officers may lawfully discharge their weapons while performing official duties.
The Inspector-General emphasised that every officer must operate strictly within the law and comply with established rules governing the use of force. The police maintained that at no point did the IGP instruct officers to shoot individuals solely because they were found with illegal firearms.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the Nigeria Police Force stated that its personnel are expected to protect lives while respecting the Constitution, human rights and all applicable laws. The Force also appealed to journalists, media organisations and members of the public to verify information before publishing or sharing reports on security matters.
According to the statement, inaccurate reports on sensitive security issues can generate unnecessary fear, misinform citizens and erode public trust in security institutions.
