The Enugu State Government has approved a fresh round of Enugu infrastructure projects covering roads, housing, tourism and public facilities as part of its long-term economic transformation agenda.
The approvals were granted during the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting, where commissioners said the projects align with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of expanding the state’s economy from $4 billion to $30 billion within eight years. Speaking after the meeting, Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, joined other commissioners in outlining the extensive development initiatives approved by the council.
Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ben Osy Okoh, disclosed that the government approved the completion and modernization of Wings C and D of the Enugu State Secretariat Complex in the Government Reserved Area (GRA), alongside rehabilitation works on the already occupied Wings A and B.
According to him, the unfinished sections of the secretariat have remained abandoned for years and will now undergo comprehensive reconstruction with upgraded facilities while repairs will also address structural issues affecting the existing wings. As part of the Enugu infrastructure projects, the government also approved the construction of 1,000 fully detached terrace housing units comprising four- and five-bedroom homes within the New Enugu City development.
The state is equally progressing with plans for an additional 18,000 mass housing units at Gateway Estate to reduce the housing deficit and improve access to affordable homes. The development will include roads, electricity, water supply and other supporting infrastructure.
Council also approved the immediate construction of the 10.5-kilometre Igogoro–Amachara–Ikpamodo–Okpo–Amaada road, as well as flood control interventions and drainage rehabilitation along major roads in Nsukka. To strengthen maintenance capacity, the government further authorised the procurement of more than 30 light-duty construction equipment for direct labour and emergency intervention projects.
In the tourism sector, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, announced approval for three landmark tourism developments designed to boost visitor traffic and diversify the state’s economy. These include the Ovu Lake Golf Resort in Akpawfu, the Akwuke Tourism Development Project, the Attakwu Tourism Development Project, and the flagship Okpatu–Awhum Cable Car initiative.
The proposed Ovu Lake Golf Resort will feature an 18-hole championship golf course, luxury accommodation, conference facilities, recreational centres, sporting facilities and waterfront attractions. The Attakwu project will focus on eco-tourism, transforming its natural forest and lake into an animal sanctuary and nature destination, while Akwuke will be developed into a family leisure centre with a sand beach, water park, theme park and recreational facilities.
Madueke also explained that the Okpatu–Awhum Cable Car will span about 5.32 kilometres, connecting the Cross of Hope on Okpatu Hill to the famous Awhum Waterfall through an intermediate station at the Awhum Monastery, providing visitors with a scenic alternative to hiking while creating one of the state’s signature tourism attractions. The government said the combined Enugu infrastructure projects are expected to stimulate economic growth, attract private investment, improve public services and position the state as a leading destination for business, housing and tourism in Nigeria.
