The Oyo rescue operation has drawn commendation from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which praised Nigeria’s security agencies for safely rescuing abducted pupils and teachers while paying tribute to an Army officer who lost his life during the mission.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP described the intelligence-led operation as a demonstration of professionalism, coordination and dedication by Nigeria’s security forces.
The party commended the joint efforts of multiple security and intelligence agencies, noting that the successful rescue of the victims after more than 56 days in captivity showed what effective planning and collaboration could achieve. According to the SDP, the operation provided renewed hope in the country’s security architecture despite the difficult circumstances surrounding the abduction.
The party stated that the pupils and teachers were abducted on May 15, 2026, from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, Esiele, and LA Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. While describing the incident as another reminder of Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, the SDP said the eventual rescue highlighted the importance of decisive leadership and coordinated security operations.
The SDP also paid tribute to Lieutenant Felix Ademe Isaac, the 28-year-old Army officer who died during the rescue mission. According to the party, the officer’s sacrifice made it possible for dozens of families to be reunited with their loved ones. It described his courage and dedication to duty as worthy of national recognition, adding that his service would remain a lasting symbol of commitment to protecting lives and defending the nation.
Beyond applauding the rescue, the SDP urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to address the socio-economic conditions it believes contribute to insecurity. The party identified poverty, hunger and social injustice as some of the underlying factors driving criminal activities and called for policies that would improve citizens’ living conditions alongside ongoing security operations.
The SDP expressed optimism that Nigeria’s democracy would increasingly deliver improved security, better protection of lives and property, and sustainable national development. It maintained that combining effective security operations with policies that tackle the root causes of insecurity would strengthen public safety and foster lasting peace across the country.
