Oyo abduction rescue efforts came at a heavy cost as the Nigerian military disclosed that some security personnel lost their lives or sustained casualties during the month-long operation that secured the release of 44 abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
The victims, who were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, in Oriire Local Government Area, regained their freedom on July 10 after what the military described as a carefully coordinated intelligence-driven operation involving several security and intelligence agencies.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 2 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Danjuma, the rescue mission was led by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Major General C.R. Nnebeife, with support from the Office of the National Security Adviser through the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC).
Other participating agencies included the Defence Headquarters, Special Forces of the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Amotekun Corps, local vigilantes and hunters.
The military explained that the operation focused on identifying the masterminds behind the kidnapping while dismantling their operational network and logistics chain within the Old Oyo National Park Forest and other locations.
Security operatives reportedly carried out several arrests in Oyo State and other parts of the country during the operation.
According to the military, the arrests disrupted the kidnappers’ activities, destroyed their support structures and mounted sustained pressure that eventually compelled the group to release the victims without conditions.
“The operations, which lasted for more than a month, focused on identifying the terrorist kingpins that masterminded the kidnapping, busting and dismantling their networks and logistics links, including their informants and hideouts located within the Old Oyo National Park Forest,” the statement said.
The military added that dismantling the criminal network left the kidnappers disorganised and unable to sustain their operation.
While celebrating the successful rescue, the military acknowledged that the mission came with sacrifices.
Officials stated that the operation was carefully planned to ensure the safe recovery of the abducted pupils and teachers while avoiding collateral damage.
However, they confirmed that some members of the security forces suffered casualties during the operation, although no details were provided regarding the number or identities of those affected.
The rescued pupils and teachers are currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital before being handed over to the Oyo State Government for reunification with their families.
The military assured that the welfare of the rescued victims remains a priority as authorities complete post-rescue procedures.
Major General Nnebeife commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing strategic guidance and support throughout the operation.
The statement also appreciated the support of the media and members of the public, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible intelligence to security agencies to strengthen ongoing efforts against criminal groups nationwide.
He also praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for supporting security efforts within the state.
The military further acknowledged the contributions of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, other service chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, the Directors-General of the DSS and NIA, as well as heads of participating security agencies for ensuring effective coordination during the mission.
